Bye Weeks and Walking Boots: A Week 5 Fantasy Survival Guide

By Zach Martin · October 11, 2026 · 4 min read

Part of Fantasy Football

Fantasy Football Week 5
The agony and anticipation of Sunday fantasy football: a lived-in scene featuring a worn leather football, a last-minute waiver-wire sheet, and a glowing stadium view in the rain.

Week 5 is when fantasy stops being a draft and starts being a roster problem. The first bye weeks hit Thursday, the injury report is the longest it has been all year, and a handful of household names are no longer automatic starts.

Kansas City and Carolina are off. That removes depth exactly when managers need it. The rest of the slate is a triage exercise: who is actually playing, who inherits the work if they are not, and who is only a name on the waiver wire.

The injuries that rewrite lineups

Lamar Jackson left last week in a walking boot with an ankle sprain and did not practice Wednesday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported only an outside chance he starts against Atlanta. Plan as if he sits. Tyler Huntley is the stream if you are desperate at quarterback, not a must-add unless your starter is also out.

Ja’Marr Chase is in the concussion protocol and did not practice Wednesday. He needs at least a limited session Thursday to have a realistic shot at Miami. Tee Higgins is dealing with an adductor injury from the same game. Cincinnati is also on a Week 6 bye, so the team has little reason to rush either receiver. If both sit, the Bengals’ passing game becomes a dart throw, not a stack.

Saquon Barkley is week-to-week with a hamstring. Tank Bigsby got hurt behind him, which can leave Will Shipley as Philadelphia’s lead back against Jacksonville. That is a priority add if Barkley is ruled out, not a speculative stash.

Jayden Daniels practiced fully Wednesday and is expected to start Sunday in an elbow brace after a dislocation. Full participation is the green light. Start him.

De’Von Achane’s torn ACL in Week 3 is already baked into rosters. The leftover work in Miami belongs to Ollie Gordon and Jaylen Wright. Neither is a league-winner, but one of them is a flex if the snap count clarifies by Saturday.

Also on the watch list: DJ Moore, Ladd McConkey, Justin Jefferson, and De’Vonta Smith. None of those statuses will be clean until Sunday morning. Have a pivot ready, not a hope.

Waiver priorities

Spend the claim on volume, not on a name you remember from August.

  1. The Eagles back who is actually starting. If Barkley is out and Bigsby is limited, Shipley is the add. If Bigsby is healthy and Saquon sits, Bigsby is the add. Do not roster both unless your bench is empty.

  2. Whoever draws the Bengals’ targets if Chase and Higgins sit. Dohnte Meters posted 7 catches for 82 yards in the loss to Jacksonville. That is a one-week stream against Miami, not a season-long keeper.

  3. Emanuel Wilson, if he is still available. He is the clearest “already producing, still under-rostered” back on the wire this week.

  4. A quarterback stream only if Jackson, or your own starter, is confirmed out. Do not burn priority on a backup you will drop in ten days.

Leave the 4 percent rostered deep fliers for leagues where the wire is already picked clean.

Start and sit, in plain terms

Start the healthy workhorses in good offenses. Bijan Robinson, James Cook, Jonathan Taylor, and Derrick Henry do not need a narrative. CeeDee Lamb, Chris Olave, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba have been the most bankable wide receivers through four weeks. Do not get cute!!!

Sit the injured stars until the practice report says otherwise. Chase is a sit until he clears protocol. Jackson is a sit until he practices. Barkley is a sit if he is listed doubtful or is a true game-time decision and you have a real replacement.

Stream against the bad defenses, not toward the famous names. Miami is 0–4. Houston and Tennessee are 0–4. The Chargers are 0–4. Tampa Bay is 0–4. A middling flex with a real role against one of those teams beats a star whose status will not be known until 12:30.

How to use the Thursday window

Check the Bengals’ injury designations before you lock any Cincinnati player. Check the Eagles’ backfield before you spend a waiver claim. If you have a Chief or a Panther in a weekly lineup, they are a zero. Replace them now, not Sunday morning.

The managers who win Week 5 will not be the ones who called a breakout in August. They will be the ones who treated the injury report as the lineup.
